Laundry and Kids: Choose Your Battles Wisely

With three boys ages 12, 7,  and almost 5, laundry can get to be quite a daunting task.  If I let it.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely don't have all the answers when it comes to taming the laundry beast.  For instance, what do I do when I find a bunch of clothes in the dirty laudnry that I KNOW haven't been worn?  It could be they weren't put away properly, but it could also be that they were dug out, tried on, and discarded for the next experiment.  But, I digress.  It's a battle that, for the moment, I choose not to fight.

Another battle that I choose not to fight is whether or not the laundry even MAKES it to the laundry room.  I used to be a total nag about this, until one day I learned the sweet relief of just saying, "Tough!"  Ironically, my younger two, who share a room, are pretty good about getting their dirty clothes to the laundry room on a daily basis during their morning chore time.  They both have favorite PJ's and clothes they like to dress up in to play super heroes or Indiana Jones.  So, they're pretty good at keeping each other accountable for their dirty laundry.  They are to take turns bringing their shared basket to the laundry room each morning.  My oldest, however, used to be really bad about bringing his dirty laundry to the laundry room.  He's definitely learned his lesson, though.  I told them all one day that I wasn't going to remind them to bring their laundry to the laundry room anymore.  And I didn't!  I also told them that if they wanted something washed after I was done with laundry for that day, tough!  They would have to just wait until I did laundry the next day.  I usually do at least one load of darks every day, while it takes 2-3 days to get enough whites for a load.  My oldest still doesn't bring his laundry to the laundry room daily, but he has quickly learned to bring it there before he runs out of stuff to wear!  Of course, he is also welcome to do his own laundry.  ;-)  He does know how, and I do have him do it sometimes.  But laundry is actually something I have learned to enjoy, and you're about to find out why.  :-)

Here's how laundry works in our home.  Everyone, of course, is responsible for getting their own laundry to the baskets in the laundry room.  Everyone knows how to separate the whites from the darks.  I have two baskets in my laundry room.  In one goes all the darks and all the bath towels and wash cloths.  In the other goes all the whites and dish towels and dish cloths.

I start the process.  The first load of the day is always the darks, since that's what we have most of.  I will start the washer and load dark clothes in, leaving the towels and wash cloths for another load.  When that load is done, I will call any one of the three boys to reboot it to the dryer.  All three know how to do this, from emptying the lint trap to putting the dryer sheet in to getting the dryer started.  Usually the younger two do it together, but that's usually because whichever one I called was interrupted from playing with the other one, so they try to get it done as quickly as possible.  LOL!  After that's done, I'll start the next load in the washer if another load is needing to be washed.  Then, one of the boys will unload things from the dryer onto my bed and do another reboot if needed.

And now we get to another choice to make in picking battles.  First, I'll tell you what I used to do.  I used to give my oldest his clothes to fold and put away.  Then, I used to fold both of the younger boys' clothes into separate piles and had them put them away.  Then, I used to get frustrated as they dug through their dressers and messed up all those nicely folded clothes.  Then, I taught them how to fold their own clothes and got frustrated with their own frustration, and how long it took, and how their folded clothes never quite looked like folded clothes.  You see the struggle?  No more!  I chose to make this a non-battle.

What do I now do with that pile of clothes laying on my bed from the dryer?  I separate my husband's and my own clothes and put them away.  Everyone else's gets thrown over to the floor by my doorway into one pile.  Then, I call for everyone to come get their clothes.  They come sort out which is whose and they know they have to get them put away right away.  The oldest folds his.  Sometimes the younger boys make a sloppy attempt at folding them, but more often than not, they stuff them into their dressers.  And I am seriously okay with that.  Because now, when they dig around for that cape (or whatever), I'm not stressing out about how they're undoing the work that I did.  The clothes are clean, they're at least put away in appropriate drawers (socks in one, shirts in another, etc.) and they're doing it on their own.  Having clothes folded neatly is simply a battle I choose not to fight.  Just like their big brother, one day they will "get it," and will appreciate how much easier it will make their life to keep their clothes neat, and will be able to do it just as easily as the rest of us.  Until then, at least in our home, pushing the issue into a battle is a completely unnecessary stress.

Renewed Goals: Godly and Bible Habits

This first goal really needs to be dealt with by getting my heart, mind, and body aligned to the right priorities.  The very first thing I need to do each day to make sure things go right (and to make sure I'm truly ready when things go wrong), is to make sure that line of communication is open between me and God.  Of course, on His end, He is ALWAYS ready, but there are days when *I* forget to turn to Him, especially before I react.  And, those are the days when I didn't get up early or just plain "didn't have time" to just start out spending time alone with Him...talking with Him...and most important of all, LISTENING to Him.  And my excuse for those days?  I couldn't concentrate because the kids were distracting me.

But, let's get to the real heart of the issue here.  WHY were the kids distracting me?  Because that's what kids do, especially when they first get up in the morning and there is so much activity.  Did I know about this?  Yes.  Do I do anything about it?  I try, and I've had some good stretches in the past.  But, let's face it.  With all the sickness we've had in our household over the last couple of months, and then all the holiday chaos taking over after that (complete with some time off from homeschooling), trying to sleep in has become the norm lately.  And it has been showing, not only in where my heart is a lot of the time, but also in the behavior of my kids.  So, it's time to re-purpose to work on my morning wake-up time.

Now, in a way, this is going to go against my wanting to NOT go into things full-hilt.  But, there are just some things that are not an option.  I always say I'm "working on it," which leaves room for the option of just plain not doing it because I don't feel like it.  So, this is one of those things that I need not say "I will work on it," but rather, "I'm going to DO it."  From past experience, I know getting up in the morning with sufficient time before the kids get up is not something that I can "work towards."  Don't get me wrong, there ARE times where I need this option...this just isn't one of those times.

So, 6:00 AM.  That's it!  It's not a "goal," where I'm going to set my alarm clock 15 minutes earlier until I reach it, that's just when I am going to get up from now on.  Some people need to work toward it gradually, but I have learned that I can't do that because I will never get there!  ;)  Now, once I'm at it for awhile, I can always change it to an earlier time if I feel like I need to (for instance, if I'm barely making noise but the kids are still getting up 10 minutes after me...ask me how I got that idea...wait, don't).  And, of course, I WILL be going from a very simple morning routine at the start to adding things as I get used to it.  But, 6:00 is my desired wake up time, so that's when I'm going to wake up at the get-go.  No, I will NOT like it at first, and it WILL be tough, but as long as I'm sticking to it, my bed time will automatically adjust and before I know it, it will become second nature.  :)

Okay, ALL that build up, and then, here comes my teeny, tiny morning routine to start out with:
Wake up
Get dressed (because I know from experience, reading in bed usually ends with me waking up later using the book as a pillow LOL!)
Daily bible reading for about 30-60 minutes
Get the kids up and started on their chores
Breakfast

Tomorrow is not going to be pretty, but hopefully by the end of the week, I'll be used to it and ready to tackle the next things.  :)

Restructuring the family routine, and a few new rules

It all started with sewing patches.  My oldest son is in his first year of the Boy Scouts, so I found myself sewing a lot of patches onto his new shirt a few days ago.  I'm a pretty amateur sewer on the machine, but especially with hand stitching.  I definitely improved my skills and patience, though!  :)  Hubby and I were talking about improving my sewing capabilities, and he said he was thinking of getting me a new sewing machine.  The machine I have now was his grandmother's, who passed away before he and I met.  She got it in the 60's, I believe.  When I first got it, I couldn't get it to sew without breaking thread, so he took it in for a tune-up, after which it worked pretty well.  That was about 3 years ago.  Shortly after we moved into this house, not quite 2 years ago, it started acting up again and I haven't been able to use it.  I've been wanting to get it in for another tune-up, but hubby said with what it costs for a tune-up every year or two, we'd be better off getting a new one.

That long story to say, I knew the first thing I wanted to make once I get my new machine and get a little more proficient at sewing:  a cover for the TV.  We have a LCD mounted on our living room wall, and I'm thinking something with elastic around the edge, kind of like those plastic wrap bowl covers that you just slip over the top.  But bigger and made of fabric.  And for the TV.  :)  We had gotten in the habit of having the TV on A LOT lately...even if we weren't watching, it was background.  The day after my TV cover idea, hubby came to me and said he wants the TV off from now on.  The only time we will have it on is as a treat or for special occasions, like football.  ;)  Hubby and I do have kind of a nightly "date" thing going where we watch an episode or two of CSI: NY on the blue-ray player before we go to bed, but it's always after the kids are all in bed and sleeping.  Yesterday was our first full day with no TV, and it didn't go quite as bad as I thought.  In fact, I swear the kids were in a better mood.  We're doing more fun things now, like playing board games or Go Fish, or reading together.  And doing more not-so-fun things, but things that really need to get done, like getting the house clean and organized, and thinking about getting ready for the upcoming holidays (okay, that last part is fun, at least for me!).

Another bad habit we had gotten ourselves into (and I think this one just naturally goes with having the TV on all the time) is not eating at the dinner table.  So, we re-instituted that rule yesterday as well.  And it has been nothing but wonderful.  :)  I really thought there would be protesting about this one, but the kids were actually excited.  And we're not just doing dinner, or just when Daddy's home.  EVERY meal is eaten together at the table.  I can't even describe to you what a wonderful time of fellowship and bonding this has been for us as a family already.  Not to mention, eating meals at the table forces me to make sure that I have meals planned out.  Yikes, I have let myself slip into these bad habits around the house lately, and meal planning (or lack thereof) has probably been the most disastrous.  It becomes too much of a free-for-all and it's too costly!

It's only been a day, but I am absolutely loving the changes that are already taking place because of these new "rules."  I'm already thinking about other things I can do to minister to my family and make this a more joyful household.  The next thing to work on is definitely my computer time.  I'm not constantly on the computer, but it's always ON (with the internet always up), and so easy to slip on for "just a few minutes."  It doesn't help that the chair at the computer desk has sort of become "my chair," either.  Even if I'm not on the computer, it's where I gravitate to when we're relaxing, or when I'm knitting, or reading, etc.  So, of course, that makes it even easier to slip on and see what's going on around the internet world.  So, I'm trying to change that.  I'm not there yet, but my goal is to have the computer logged off the internet and on sleep mode unless it's nap time or the kids are sleeping for the night.  Or, unless I need a recipe or something else pertinent that I need to look up while we're homeschooling.  The good thing is, is that when I AM on the computer, my time will be more focused and purposeful (such as planned blog posts, as I've been wanting to do!), as opposed to the "mindless wandering" I sometimes do.

I'm really excited about these changes, and, as always, I can't wait to see the plans that the Lord has for my family!

A few changes

Okay, I'm back in action!  It's been awhile since I've posted here because I've been busy starting a new recipe blog for people following the MS Diet.  You can check that out here.

I've also been struggling to find a cleaning routine at home, but I think I've found a good one.  I just couldn't keep consistent with flylady for some reason, and I was talking to a friend of mine from church, and she recommended this site to me.  I figured I'd better try it out for awhile to see how it works, and I gotta tell you, it works awesome for me!  I printed out the June calendar and follow all the tasks each day.  It's simple enough to not get overwhelming, but gets enough done to be noticeable each day.  Plus, I still have time to do school and anything else that needs to be done for the day.  I love it!  Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Annual Cleaning

As spring quickly approaches here, "Spring Cleaning" is on my mind. Being the defeated perfectionist that I am, I hate to admit that I really don't think I've ever fully completed a Spring Cleaning list that I've ever attempted to start. :) This year, I am going to give the annual list from Home Comforts a try. A few of these things I may also do in the fall, if needed, and many will probably just be added to my "Odd Jobs" list as time allows.

Wash blankets, comforters, and quilts
Give away unused clothing
Clean & polish gems, jewelry, silver, brass, copper
Clean light fixtures
Vacuum books
Move & clean under heavy appliances/furniture
Shampoo rugs and upholstery
Empty and clean all closets, drawers, and cabinets
Dust or wash china, crystal, knickknacks
Wash blinds and shades
Dry-clean/wash curtains
Organize/store photos, videos, CD's

Whew! For such a "short" list, it looks pretty daunting, but, we'll see how it goes this year. ;)

Monthly and Quarterly Cleaning

If I am on my game and get all my weekly chores done with time to spare, I move on to my monthly chores. I keep these on the same notebook page as my quarterly chores, as these lists are much shorter. So, if I have all my monthly cleaning done, and time to spare after my weekly chores are completed, I work on the quarterly cleaning.

Monthly Chores:
Launder underbedding (mattress covers) and blankets that are NOT comforters
Dust blinds, shades, door tops, and other hard-to-reach areas
Wash windows
Clean ceiling fan blades
Wash bathroom rugs

Quarterly Chores:
Turn mattresses
Wash or air pillows
Clean light shades, globes, dust lightbulbs

As needed:
Clean oven
Wash woodwork (I usually just do spot cleaning for this)
Organize drawers, cabinets, closets (these will usually get done as I have time as odd jobs)

Odd Jobs

Odd jobs are things I want to get done, but are not specifically mentioned on my other lists. Yes, I am a big list person. Especially with my MS, I have found that I NEED to make lists. If I don't write it down, it may or may not get done. ;)

Right now, my goal is to get the house completely organized and to get rid of clutter. I still go by the zones from Flylady. So, seeing as I am just beginning to implement these routines, I am starting in Zone 1. So, my current "Odd Jobs" list includes:

Organize front hall
Organize dining room
Clean the yard and decks

I do not give myself a specific period of time to complete odd jobs, so they will stay on the list until they are done. That way, I know they are getting done thoroughly, and not just rushed through to get them crossed off by the end of the week.

Weekly Homekeeping

Once the daily chores are done or in progress, I begin tackling the weekly chores.

Change beds
Dust
Wipe fingerprints/smears from doorknobs, woodwork, phones, computer, and switch plates
Wash entire bathroom (both)
Clean entire kitchen
Wash out garbage cans
Vacuum floors/furniture
Wash all washable floors
----------------------------------------------
Laundry
Shopping
Odd jobs (will post about these later)
Mini-cleaning and laundering (because let's face it, a family of 5 cannot do laundry or vacuum just once per week!)
Iron clothes
-----------------------------------------------
As needed:
Wash mirrors

With the weekly list, I do cross off as I go. I don't really have a routine to complete this list, I just try to get it done before the next week starts.

If I finish the weekly list with time to spare, I begin on my monthly list.

Lisa

Daily Homekeeping

I thought I would begin to post my new homekeeping routines. Much of these are taken and adapted from the book Home Comforts, by Cheryl Mendelson. It's a great book, and I highly recommend it.

I keep a notebook on my kitchen counter with lists of daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual, and annual chores. For the daily chores, I don't really cross anything off, I just go through the list several times throughout the day and make sure everything is being maintained. Here is the list:

Dirty clothes in hamper (this reminds me to run a load of laundry if there is enough for a load)
Clean sinks after use (this reminds me to do the dishes if necessary)
Check bath supplies/towels
Meal prep/clean-up
Fresh kitchen towels/cloths
Fresh cleaning utensils (this reminds me to bleach kitchen brushes and dustpan if necessary)
Clean kitchen and hall floors (high traffic areas are done daily, and this includes washing if necessary)
Make beds
Pick up house/neaten
Empty trash (in evening, if full)

That's it. Once everything is done or in progress on the daily list, I work on the weekly chores, which I will post next.

It's been awhile...

Yikes, it's been awhile since I've had time to sit down and blog.  I'm finally feeling better after a couple of months of different ailments.  The medication I'm taking for the MS weakens my immune system so that it will slow down it's attack on itself.  In the meantime, I have been catching anything that comes my way.  Since Christmas, I have had either a cold or upper-respiratory or some other infection.  Each time that happens, I get mock MS symptoms, most of all, FATIGUE.  And the neuro can't give me anything for that while I have an infection, because they don't want to weaken my immune system even more, or I can't fight the infection.  So it's kind of a catch-22.  Finally, I was healthy enough a couple of weeks ago to get a 3 day steroid pack for the MS stuff.  It worked wonderfully, except for the FATIGUE.  I wasn't even getting the basics done.  Finally I talked to my neuro about it, and she gave me Amantadine.  I've been on half-dose for 2 days, and so far, it's working beautifully. Although, I have 5 more days to make sure no side effects pop up, then I can go to full dose.

So, yeah, my routine has definitely not been kept up the way I would like to have done it.  But, I decided to simplify a little.  Now, everyday, I want to at least keep up on dishes and laundry, keep things picked up in general, spot-sweep floors, and spot-clean bathrooms.  I'm assigning a different section of the house for each day of the week:

Monday-front entrance, hallway, and dining room
Tuesday-kitchen (my favorite!)
Wednesday-bathrooms and one other room (which could be laundry room, one of the kids' rooms, the guest room, or part of the basement)
Thursday-master bedroom
Friday-living room

Whatever needs getting done in a room, it will be done on its assigned day, whether it be de-cluttering, deep cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, or even a decorating fix.  I have to be very diligent with this, because even today, I got the living room all done, and wanted to move on to other rooms.  When I do this, I burn out, so I made sure the basics were done everywhere else, and just enjoyed being in my nice, shiny living room!

Wow, I even made my first real dinner in a long time (one that wasn't thrown together with a lot of convenience foods and last-minute decisions because I hadn't thought about it all day) of oven-fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, veggies, and pickled beets.  I even made a simple dessert of black cherry jell-o and whipped cream to boot!

It feels so good to finally feel like things are getting back under control on the home-front.  We have been keeping up on school the whole time, as that is high on my priority list.  We are almost 20 days in to first grade with V, and he is doing so well!  And we are both having so much fun with the curriculum!  For now we are doing Mon-Sat as that pace will get us done in time for fall, so we can start second grade then.

Before you fall asleep reading my novel, I will close for now.  LOL!
